So my library has been having a sale, books are .25c each or five for $1, and I got 3 free book vouchers from the summer reading program, so every time I've been in the area of a library branch I've gone in and gone hog fucking wild on anything that looks remotely interesting

im not a lesbian but i notice how quickly gay headcanons for men who have canonical relationships with women are explained away and given justification (which i support and do) but when you headcanon a female character who has canonically been in a relationship with a man as a lesbian, suddenly there's an issue and ppl start claiming "bi erasure" or whatever for a character who typically has 0 canonical sexual orientation. it's interesting. im sure a lesbian could give a much more comprehensive and analytical response to this but. i just think about it a lot.

I'm so used to being in fandoms w a primarily fujo fan base 😭😭😭 I keep trying to watch the jjk skit videos on YouTube but SO MANY of them make the characters into gross horny dudebros I hate it!! Especially when it comes to how they write Megumi like tell me how they saw a guy who literally says in canon that he only cares about the character and not the appearance of his partner and decided that they should make 20+ skits where he thirsts over *insert female character* bc she's got a fat ass??? Like who the hell is that bc it sure as hell isn't Megumi. And if you wanted a character to thirst over someone's ass Yuji is literally right there and it's passable bc at least that's a thought he voiced in canon? I think these straight guys are just projecting super hard on these characters and feel pissy about how some fans think Megumi might not be heterosexual so they gotta make sure to say how much he likes titties so no one thinks that he might like boys. They ESPECIALLY over-compensate when it comes to him and I think it's very telling.

the thing is i think steven moffat is. to be totally honest. an absolutely brilliant writer and the themes he explores are ones i personally find more compelling (the doctor as a fairytale figure & the show as overt fantasy, notably). but his gender politics makes me want to screeeeeeeam

Have you ever read the Kushiel’s Dart series? I recently rediscovered it while doing a bookshelf purge and boy, that was a wild series for classic romance. I think that was my first introduction to the concept of kink as a baby romance/fantasy reader. Some of it was well executed, some of it was absolutely not, and I’m sure hasn’t aged particularly well. But it definitely left an impression, and guided my taste in romance. If you enjoyed doctrine of labyrinths, it may be worth a peek just for the novelty of it all.
I have, and honestly it felt kind of outdated when I first started reading it like over a decade ago.
I think because it's so aggressively heterosexual (compared to everything I read these days), it wasn't my thing when I started reading it, and it's just become more and more not my thing over time.
However, the Kushiel's series did shape a lot of folk's understanding of themselves and their wants in relationship to kink, and it's been really fundamental for so many people, so I can understand in that sense why it's such a beloved series. The concept is also pretty interesting, and I thought the world-building was cool too, though I don't remember any of it, lol. I never got through the second book though, after the first I realised that I didn't find it personally gripping enough to keep going.
But like I said, it's aggressively heterosexual, and generally speaking if I have a choice, I never read heterosexual content and try to avoid it, and that very much impacts my enjoyment of these sorts of stories!
Tbh I wouldn't compare Kushiel's Dart and Doctrine of Labyrinths at all, personally. If someone recced DOL to me based off Kushiel's Dart I not only wouldn't read it, I'd probably go out of my way to avoid it. x.x I'm sorry anon, one of the reasons I encourage people not to really send me recs is that I am an extremely particular reader / watcher / viewer etc. and folks are more likely to hear how much I don't love something rather than how much I do.
(I really wouldn't be writing if I wasn't so picky, lol)
(To everyone else who loves or has nostalgia for this series, that's awesome and don't listen to me lol I love the Black Jewels trilogy sdalkfjdsa I can't talk)

RE: Idea of You
I don't think those people can be reasoned with. They're so set in their ways that they'll argue and spout those nonsense ad nauseam esp. since they also surround themselves with people who have the same opinions so it's all just one vast echo chamber.
The worst I've seen is that apparently Anne and Nick are promoting grooming which is like??? Whaat???? 🙄😒. But on the other hand I've also seen lots of people hyped for it so hopefully Anne and Nick can enjoy their success.
Fully agree! They are definitely in an echo chamber and I don’t think anything anyone says to them can pierce that because his stans are so devoted. I think the word “inspired” is doing a lot of heavy lifting here but the character Nick is playing is INSPIRED by a Harry Styles-type pop star and not meant to be a re-creation of real events or a real person. But I don’t think they’re ready to hear that lol.
Yes I think purity culture as well as severe individualism are at play here. People see age difference and immediately assume it’s problematic and start throwing around terms like “grooming” with zero understanding of what they mean. Also, personally I don’t really have an issue with the age difference in TIOY but it’s also totally okay if people don’t like the age difference thing! I think the disconnect comes in where people can’t differentiate between not personally liking something and it being actually harmful and problematic!
